Quintessence, the Gravitational Constant, and Gravity
نویسنده
چکیده
Dynamical vacuum energy or quintessence, a slowly varying and spatially inhomogeneous component of the energy density with negative pressure, is currently consistent with the observational data. One potential difficulty with the idea of quintessence is that couplings to ordinary matter should be strongly suppressed so as not to lead to observable time variations of the constants of nature. We further explore the possibility of an explicit coupling between the quintessence field and the curvature. Since such a scalar field gives rise to another gravity force of long range (∼ H 0 ), the solar system experiments put a constraint on the non-minimal coupling: |ξ| ∼ 10−2. Competition Between Gravitational and Scalar Field Radiation
Recent astrophysical observations have provided strong evidence that the present expansion of the universe is accelerating, powered by the energy density associated with a cosmological term. Assuming the latter to be not simply a constant term but a “quintessence” field, we study the radiation of quanta of such a “quintessence” field (“quintons”) by binary systems of different types and compare...
متن کاملEffects of Gravitational and Hydrostatic Initial Stress on a Two-Temperature Fiber-Reinforced Thermoelastic Medium for Three-Phase-Lag
The three-phase-lag model and Green–Naghdi theory without energy dissipation are employed to study the deformation of a two-temperature fiber-reinforced medium with an internal heat source that is moving with a constant speed under a hydrostatic initial stress and the gravity field. The modulus of the elasticity is given as a linear function of the reference temperature. The exact expressions ...
متن کاملScalar - field quintessence by cosmic shear : CFHT data analysis and forecasts for DUNE ‡
A light scalar field, minimally or not-minimally coupled to the metric field, is a well-defined candidate for the dark energy, overcoming the coincidence problem intrinsic to the cosmological constant and avoiding the difficulties of parameterizations. We present a general description of the weak gravitational lensing valid for every metric theory of gravity, including vector and tensor perturb...
متن کاملBrane World Cosmologies and Statistical Properties of Gravitational Lenses
Brane world cosmologies seem to provide an alternative explanation for the present accelerated stage of the Universe with no need to invoke either a cosmological constant or an exotic quintessence component. In this paper we investigate statistical properties of gravitational lenses for some particular scenarios based on this large scale modification of gravity. We show that a large class of su...
متن کاملAn investigation of gravitational lens determinations of Ho in quintessence cosmologies
There is growing evidence that the majority of the energy density of the universe is not baryonic or dark matter, rather it resides in an exotic component with negative pressure. The nature of this ‘quintessence’ influences our view of the universe, modifying angular diameter and luminosity distances. Here, we examine the influence of a quintessence component upon gravitational lens time delays...
